1867 - The Birth of Democracy in Britain

The 1867 Reform Act gave the power of the vote to ordinary people in Britain for the first time. Previously voting had been the priveledge of the rich, now any man over 21 living in a city could vote. It was not what would be considered a fair electoral system. Women and country dwellers could not vote, but it was a gigantic step in that direction.

1867 - The Birth of Canada

1867 was also a big year for North America. The nation of Canada was formed on 1 July 1867. As the name Canada was already being used by two provinces, it was necessary for these provinces to change their names from Lower Canada and Upper Canada to Quebec and Ontario respectively.
